Second Thief, Best Thief – An Old Jersey City Saying
The Jersey City Waterfront once was covered with warehouses and piers. Adjacent to these were miles of railroad yards dotted with innumerable sheds and small buildings for use as storage and as workshops for mechanics, machinists, and welders.
During the depression, children from impoverished families would climb onto the roofs of the outlying structures, both to hide and to gain a view of the surrounding area. From up there, they'd watch for workers stealing from the docks, the trains, or the warehouses. The initial crooks would sneak off into the weeds to hide the swag with the idea of retrieving it at the end of the shift. Seeing opportunity made available, the kids would wait a bit for the situation to cool. Then, they'd climb down, grab the goods, and make a getaway through the vacant lots.
Practitioners coined the saying "second thief, best thief" to describe this method of survival.

EDEN’S GATE by David Friedland
EDEN’S GATE
I woke in the reflected light of Lucifer’s Moon
frozen, as shadow eyes hunt me glowing
brighter as the Spirits commune
I wait at Eden’s gate for the
serpent to shed his skin
and let me in
His mate calls,
Her thighs glisten moist
as the morning dew petals of a midnight rose
Now as then, she knows!
I am David, son of Jacob, son of Joseph
born of Miriam, at the instant of fire and fire.
I am, as I was., a traveler
Chosen to marry Dusk and Dawn
Leilah & Helel ben Shaḥar
For this alone, I was born.
Twelve times, I call those who fled
to Greet He who lives though dead
and each of the Four Who Guard the Gates
Uriel and the Fates
I greet
the Mother and Father
of all rivers, and every tree
even the rocks harken to me
By His Will
INFINITY.
Now together the fallen and the risen
what was taken is now given
His breath rises as a warm wind
The Child is Born Again
What has been done is now undone
We are
ONE
Demons howl at the still moon
Have I summoned them too soon?
Tempted even Satan to the gate
for forgiveness of his hate?
I await the Masters word
Only He can declare them free
Only He the power to restore
them to eternity.
The forces of evil implore
me to open my own door
for if forgiveness is divine
They ask “Why do I withhold mine?”
The vine that grew from my father’s tree
is the Serpent that now asks me
Within the Child the answer lies
To the King of LIES.
THE CHILD SPEAKS AN ANCIENT TONGUE
UNITING BABBLE SO WE SPEAK AS ONE
“YOUR OWN FORGIVENESS IS DIVINE
YOUR OWN WORD THE SAME AS MINE”
IF YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR FATE
THEN WALK PAST EDEN’S GATE.
